Ocracoke Island

Ocracoke Island, North Carolina was a popular haven for Pirates. Mainly comprised of small marshes it provided ample and suitable crags for privateers to hide their sloops, pinnaces and small vessels.
It is widely believed that Blackbeard, Captain William Kidd, Stede Bonnet and Calico Jack Rackham buried treasure within its vicinity.
The North Breakers of Ocracoke Island was the site where upon November 22, 1718 the Pirate Blackbeard encountered a British Naval fleet dispatched from Virginia to hunt him down.
Led by Lieutenant Robert Maynard, the British fleet engaged Blackbeard in battle. After a long fight Captain Edward Teach (Blackbeard) was killed. The pirate was then decapitated and his head was hung from the bowsprit of his vessel, "Queen Anne's Revenge".
